Sammy Sosa defined Chicago baseball in the late 1990s through power, joy and an unmistakable presence at the plate.
Born in San Pedro de Macorís, Dominican Republic, Sosa became one of the most prolific home run hitters of his era — a seven-time All-Star, six-time Silver Slugger and the only player in MLB history with three 60-home-run seasons.
In 1998, Sammy hit 66 home runs and drove in 158, helping carry the Cubs to the postseason and earning National League MVP. His home run chase with Mark McGwire turned every at-bat into an event.
