Story:
The Mirabal sisters, also known as the "Mariposas," were four Dominican women who bravely challenged the oppressive rule of dictator Rafael Trujillo in the Dominican Republic. Through their involvement in political activism and their membership in the 14th of June Movement, they actively resisted Trujillo's regime and fought for democratic reforms. Tragically, on November 25, 1960, the Mirabal sisters were ruthlessly assassinated by Trujillo's supporters. Their untimely deaths sparked widespread outrage and served as a catalyst for increased opposition to Trujillo's tyrannical rule. The Mirabal sisters' unwavering courage and their unwavering commitment to justice and freedom have made them enduring symbols of resistance, particularly in the realms of women's rights and human rights. Their remarkable story continues to inspire people around the world and has been immortalized in literature and film, including Julia Alvarez's acclaimed novel "In the Time of the Butterflies" and its subsequent movie adaptation.
