Story:
In October 1977, a group of Puerto Rican nationalists draped the Puerto Rican flag across Lady Liberty's crown in a bold call for independence. For decades, residents of the U.S. territory had been treated as second-class American citizens, unable to vote or enjoy full representation in government. In response, activists occupied the Statue of Liberty, demanding the release of four militant nationalists who had participated in a shooting at the U.S. House of Representatives in 1954 to protest Puerto Rico's colonial status. Their stand served as a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggle for equality and self-determination in Puerto Rico and beyond!
