Story:

Puerto Rican warrior symbols include lizards, snakes, and turtles! – each of which translated to survival and strength. Today, Puerto Ricans display Taino tattoos to express their pride in their Native American heritage. Taino artwork richly unifies a wide variety of symbology from documented historical sites throughout the Caribbean. We wanted to share that strength and heritage with you all with the Tortuga graphic, Tortuga also means turtle. Sea turtles are among the most magnificent residents of the Caribbean, but they're also among the most endangered. Overfishing, pollution, and degradation of nesting areas have made life more difficult for the region's green, loggerhead, leatherback, and hawksbill sea turtles.

Sea turtles are a key part of marine ecosystems worldwide, but they face many threats today. NOAA works to protect and conserve six sea turtle species found in U.S. waters. All are threatened or endangered. It is estimated that green turtle populations in the Wider Caribbean Region (WCR) have declined by over 97 percent since precolonial times, and local extinctions of nesting turtles have been widespread in the region.
